Wanda Weller Obituary

Danville, IL - Wanda (Dossey) Weller died on Friday, January 2, at the age of 97 with her beloved son Toby by her side. She was born on February 18, 1928, to Samuel and Marie (Bennett) Dossey at their home in Collison, Illinois. She married Elwood Ellis in 1947 and they had five children. They divorced in 1971. Wanda married Duane Nafziger in 1972 and they shared 30 years together until his passing in 2002. She married Jack Weller in 2013. He preceded her in 2018.

Wanda graduated from Bismarck High School and later attended classes at Edison Community College (now Florida SouthWestern State College) in Fort Myers, Florida. She was a member of the Bismarck First Church of Christ for many years. She attended the McGregor Baptist Church in Fort Myers and more recently Southside Church of Christ in Danville.

Wanda was employed at a variety of places in Danville, including Sears, Windbreaker, dentists' offices, and what formerly was referred to as the "unemployment" office. In Florida, where Duane and she resided for 25 years, she was employed several places, including Kmart and Lee Memorial Hospital. Perhaps her favorite position was serving as the hostess at The Hut, a restaurant with a tropical theme that featured Elvis impersonators and other musical artists. She enjoyed meeting the guests, especially those who were from Illinois. Wanda returned to Illinois after Duane died and opened her own cleaning service, which she operated out of her home for several years.

Wanda was an accomplished seamstress. She made matching outfits for her children when they were growing up and was honored to make her daughter Darlene's wedding dress. She had a flair for decorating and could transform a room with some fabric, colorful thread, and a can or two of spray paint. One of her favorite past times was reading. She read at least two to three books a week and had to keep a log of what she had read so she wouldn't check out the same books when she frequented the Catlin library. In addition to reading she enjoyed watching Illinois men's basketball games and taped Jeopardy every day so she didn't miss a single episode. She considered it a good day when she could answer one or two of the questions. She kept in touch with family and friends via email and Facebook until shortly before her death. She especially enjoyed her communications with her dear friend, Betty Hall.

Wanda is survived by four of her children: Gay Seidler of Naples, Florida, Penny McConnell (Mike Denhart) of Catlin, L. Scott Ellis (Kent Johnson) of Austin, Texas, and Toby Ellis of Catlin. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Shaun (Nancy) Trosper of Catlin; Traci (William) Jay, Brett Seidler, and Brad Seidler, all of Florida; Paige Byrom (Johnny Jumps) of Catlin; and Morgan (Jessica) McConnell of Mahomet, as well as two step grandchildren, Kevin Holley and Tina Holley of Danville. In addition she is survived by 13 great- grandchildren and 6 great-great -grandchildren, as well as two brothers, Norlyn Dossey and Gerald Dossey, both of Danville, and several nieces and nephews.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, her daughter Darlene (Gary) Forret, her granddaughter Stephani Seidler, her grand-son-in-law Danny Byrom, and her son-in-law Gene McConnell. She was also preceded by her sister Lavonne Toby and her husband Lloyd and her brother Marvin Dossey and his wife Edwina, as well as sisters-in-law Delores Dossey and Billie Dossey.

The family would like to thank Dr. Stewart and her staff for keeping Wanda healthy for the last two decades and for the staff and caregivers at Hawthorne Inn who provided Mom with such excellent and loving care over the last four months.

Per her request Wanda was cremated and will be laid to rest with her husband Duane at the VA National Cemetery in Danville. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the Catlin Public Library or to a charity of the donor's choice. Rortvedt Funeral Services & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
