Edwardsville, IL - OAKWOOD - Sue Ann Gibson (Lomax), 72, of Edwardsville, passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2025. She was born on January 30, 1953, in Danville. Raised in Oakwood, she was the oldest of Charles and Laura Mae's six children. While growing up, Sue spent many hours working at her grandfather Alpheus "Peck" Lomax's bait shop bordering the entrance to Kickapoo State Park. She was a graduate of Oakwood High School and the University of Illinois.
Sue married Michael Gibson on June 19, 1976 in La Habra, California. They would have been married for 49 years this month. Mike survives along with their daughter, Allison (Andrew) Gibson Beppler, and her grandchildren, Thea and Samuel. Sue is also survived by her mother, Laura Mae Lomax (Myers) of Chrisman, and her siblings, Janet (William) Devine of White Heath, Linda Herman and Brian Smothers of Oakwood, Todd (Marilyn) Lomax of Oakwood, and Laurie (Henry) Smith of Mattoon, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Sue's father, Charles, and her brother, Charles David, proceed her in death.
Sue was very active in the community when they were living in Cincinnati. She was involved in numerous service efforts at Fairfield South Elementary School and the Butler County Historical Society. Sue was a Girl Scout Troop leader for many years and active with the Four Seasons Garden Club, serving a term as Club President.
She loved researching genealogy and would spend long days at the library reviewing records. In more recent years, Sue enjoyed reading mysteries and spending time with her grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life service for Sue Ann Gibson will be held at 4:00 PM on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Oakwood, Illinois 105 East S. Main St. Oakwood, Illinois 61858. Interment will be held at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Oakwood. Visitation for family and friends will be from 3:00-4:00 PM on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at the funeral home.
