Covington, IN - Norma Alice Tellier Hawkins, 94, of Covington, IN, formerly of Danville, IL, stepped into eternity to be with her Lord and Savior, on November 16, 2025, after he blessed her with many good years. Norma was born in her parent's home on August 9, 1931, in West Hillery, Illinois, to Clement Eli Tellier and Grace Evelyn (Richardson) Tellier. She graduated from Oakwood High School in 1949. Norma married Norman Dale Hawkins on March 13, 1949, at the Danville First Assembly of God Church. Norman preceded her in death.
After graduation from high school, Norma worked at the First National Bank and Bohn Aluminum. While working, Norma attended Danville Area Community College (DACC) and then the University of Illinois. She graduated with a BA in English in 1966 and began teaching at Westville Junior High School. She taught 28 years before retiring. For several years, she taught English part-time at Danville Area Community College (DACC) and later at the Danville Christian Academy. Her biography appeared in the Outstanding Teachers of America index in 1972. In 1976 she was nominated to the "Those Who Excel Program" which recognized outstanding teachers in Illinois and she was one of eight finalists selected. During her career she was a presenter at numerous country and state teacher workshops. Norma loved poetry and included it in her classes. Norma loved to write poems about family, friends, and special occasions. In 2021 she published a book of these poems titled "Remember".
Norma's life was centered on serving the Lord. She loved music and played the clarinet, piano, bass guitar, and steel guitar. She sang in the Danville Assembly of God church choir and with the Family of God Singers singing at churches and special events throughout the Midwest. The group recorded several albums and Norma had one song "Praise the Lord Anyhow" published. After her singing voice gave out, she played her bass guitar in the Hillery Assembly of God church orchestra. Norma taught Sunday School throughout the years. During COVID she played the piano and provided a message each Sunday to her fellow residents at Liberty Village of Danville.
She is survived by her two sons; Jeffrey Dale (Terri Snyder) Hawkins of Winchester, VA and Chris Norman (Brenda Pirie) Hawkins of Bristol, TN; six grandchildren; fourteen great- grandchildren, two brothers, Larry (Anne) Tellier and Daniel (Terri) Tellier both of Florida, many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers; Ronald, Robert, Allan, and Dwight.
Visitation: 9:30 a.m.to 11:30 a.m. with a Celebration of Life service to begin immediately after at Hillery Assembly of God Church, 19454 N. Henning Road, Danville, IL 61834, on Saturday, November 29, 2025. Meal to be served following service. Pastor Kenneth Young officiating. Private Burial: All Hands Cemetery in Kickapoo. No Flowers Please. The family asks that, if you so desire, a donation be made to Hillery Assembly of God, in memory of Norma.
