He is survived by two children, Roy (Janna) Durkee of Covington, IN and Jodi Lane of Georgetown, IL; six grandchildren, Trevor (Kayla) Osborn, Lily (Andrew) Hix, Wiley Durkee, Maverick Durkee, Summerstar King, and Shyanne King; five great-grandchildren, Hexley, Hartley, and Finn Osborn, and Willow and Juniper Hix; four siblings, Debbie (Alan) Patterson, Susie (Mike) Ellis, Helen Hall, and Ronnie (Jan) Lane; and two sisters-in-law, Sherry Lane and Janice Lane.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Edward and Naomi Helen Lane; three siblings, Farrell Lane, Barb (Bob) Davidson, and Richard Lane; and a brother-in-law, Joe Hall.

Melvin began work with the Local #157 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union in 1974, having recently earned his pin for 50 years of service. He loved being a pipefitter and continued to pass down that legacy to his son and grandson. In his spare time Melvin loved to be outdoors, especially if it was to hunt, fish, or go mushroom hunting. He was also an avid sports fan and could be found vocally supporting the Chicago Bears or the Illini on game day. In high school, Melvin played football and golf and was a wrestler where he earned the nickname "Stubby" amongst his friends. Those who knew him continue to talk about "the Melvin," a wrestling maneuver he became known for during that time. Melvin also loved to spend time with his family and friends and was a loving and comforting force in their lives.
