Mary Sumila

Mary Frances Kane Sumila passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 20, 2019, in Cincinnati, Ohio where she moved in November 2015 after the death in October 2015 of her beloved husband of 68 years, Leonard J. Sumila.
Born in Danville, Ill., on February 6, 1921, Mary was the only child and devoted daughter of John F. and Katherine Kane of Franklin Street.
She went to school at St. Patrick's Grade School and graduated from Danville High School. For many years Mary worked at WDAN as a secretary where she recalled many stories about Dick Van Dyke, a fellow employee. Her late cousin, Judge John P. Meyer, always said "Mary was the best, the fastest and the most accurate shorthand secretary ever."
Mary dearly loved all animals, especially dogs and cats. Her hobbies included ceramics, jazzercise and the collecting of stuffed teddy bears. Because of Mary's rich Irish heritage, a tour of Ireland with her Cincinnati cousins and kissing the Blarney Stone were some of her most memorable experiences.
In Cincinnati, Mary leaves her many cousins and caregivers who faithfully provided their love and support.
Geo. H. Rohde & Funeral Home of Cincinnati is serving the family. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Saviour Church, Cincinnati, Ohio. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, August 23, at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Danville. Mary will be laid to rest next to her husband, Leonard, the love of her life.
