Jeffrey Scott Howard Obituary

Westville, IL - Jeffrey Scott Howard, 68, of Vermilion County, passed away on May 15, 2026 following complications that arose 11 days after a 14½-hour surgery for the rare appendix cancer, pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Born on November 21, 1957, in Danville, Illinois, Jeff was the son of Harold and Bonnie Howard. He graduated from Westville High School in 1975 and later served his country honorably in the United States Army. Over the years, Jeff worked in several occupations before finding his true calling with the Vermilion County Conservation District. Throughout his career, he held many roles within the park system and found great fulfillment in his work. He retired in November 2025 after years of dedicated service.

Jeff met the love of his life, Ruth Ann Duke, in 1984, and the two were married on July 10, 1992. Together they shared 42 beautiful years filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion.

Jeff will be remembered most for his enormous heart and his willingness to help anyone — or any animal — in need. Whether lending a hand to a friend, offering kindness to a stranger, or rescuing a raccoon trapped inside a dumpster, Jeff never ignored someone who needed help. He deeply loved spending time with his family and treasured every moment shared with Ruth.

Music was one of Jeff's greatest passions. He loved both playing and listening to it, and it brought joy throughout his life. He also enjoyed working out at the gym, being outdoors, and especially his time at Forest Glen, where he loved meeting new people and reconnecting with old friends. His warmth, humor, compassion, and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Jeff's memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, coworkers, and all whose lives he touched through his kindness and generosity.

Jeff is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Howard of Westville; his daughter, Jamie (Scott) Blackson of Wentzville, Missouri; and his son, Scott (Kara) Howard of Bismarck. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Destinie Rodgers, Alexander Howard, Scott Blackson Jr., Isabella Howard, and Gabriella Blackson; and his great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Amelia Palaca.

He is also survived by his siblings, Johnny (Nana) Howard of Danville, Patricia Vance and a very special brother-in-law, Russell Vance of Danville, and Ronald (Karla) Howard of Georgetown.

A Celebration of Life honoring Jeff will be held on June 20th at 1:00 p.m. at Maple Grove Lodge at Forest Glen Preserve. Family and friends are invited to gather to share memories and celebrate the remarkable life of a man who touched so many hearts.

Jeff's memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, coworkers, and all whose lives he touched through his kindness and generosity.
