Edna Mae Hughes Obituary

Edna Mae Hughes, 96, of Rossville, IL, passed away Friday, August 30, 2024, at The Hawthorne Inn Assisted Living Facility in Danville, IL. She was born April 21, 1928, in Oakwood, IL, the daughter of Harry Lee and Hazel Mae (Ferris) Peak. She married C.E. "Gene" Hughes on December 24, 1946, in Danville, IL. He preceded her in death.

She is survived by one daughter, Maria Lynn (Michael) VerBeke of Hoopeston, IL; two sons, Steven Eugene Hughes of Rossville, IL and Larry Dean Hughes of Williamsport, IN; five grandchildren, Larry Keith Hughes, Dana (Justin) Beckner, Tracy (Marc) Jackson, Stacy (Roger) Hobbs, and Kelly Hughes (Ben Walsh); six great-grandchildren, Lydia Ava and Jon Michael Sprague, Alyvia Grace and Tysun Marc Jackson, and Melaina Paige and Mia Kate Beckner; one sister, Reva Lind of Arizona; and two brothers, Clifford (Carol) Peak and Glen (Jerlyn) Peak all of Oakwood, IL.

In addition to her husband, Gene, Edna was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Dorothy Chilton; two brothers, Edward Peak and Robert Peak (infant); three grandchildren, Jeffery Jay and Michael Wayne Hughes and Michael Jason VerBeke; and her daughter-in-law, Debbie Hughes.

Mrs. Hughes attended Bismarck and Oakwood schools. She previously owned and operated Hughes' Antiques in Rossville along with her husband.

She was active in The Eastern Star, Junior and Senior Woman's Club, and the Rossville Canasta Club. She was a member and past Sunday School teacher of the Rossville United Methodist Church.

Her family was her first love. She particularly enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren during all stages of their lives. She appreciated and loved her many friends, loved to travel and visit friends in Florida, and she was fond of nature, wildlife, and all domestic animals.

She will be certainly missed by her family and friends beyond measure.

Cremation rites will be accorded. A visitation will be held 10:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. Monday, September 9, 2024, at Anderson Funeral Home, 427 E. Main St., Hoopeston, IL. A memorial service will follow the visitation and will begin at 12:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Chris Quick officiating. Burial will follow in Mann's Chapel Cemetery in rural Rossville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Rossville United Methodist Church, 116 Maple St., Rossville, IL 60963.
