HILLSBORO, Ind. — Wilta Ilene (Webster) Harshbarger, 93, Hillsboro, passed away at 8:13 a.m. EDT Monday, Aug. 1, 2016, in Ben Hur Nursing Center, Crawfordsville, Ind.
Wilta was born in Hamilton, Ill., on June 10, 1923. She was the daughter of the late Ralph Maynard and Leila Maude (Fryer) Webster. Wilta grew up in Hamilton and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1941.
Following graduation, Wilta worked as a secretary for St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, Calif. In 1944, Wilta enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. and served in the records department in Arlington, Va. At the time of her honorable discharge she had attained the rank of sergeant.
Wilta was first married to John Casselman in Clayton, N.Y. Mr. Casselman died in WWII serving in the Battle of the Bulge. While visiting Hillsboro, Ind., with a friend, Wilta met Donald Lester Harshbarger. They struck up a friendship and were married Sept. 12, 1946, in Chicago. Donald preceded her in death on Sept. 8, 1988.
After her marriage to Donald, Wilta became a farm wife and assisted her husband on the family farm southeast of Hillsboro. She moved to the family farm in Hillsboro in 1946 and following Donald's passing moved into Hillsboro in 1989.
Wilta was a member of Hillsboro United Methodist Church and served on several committees and boards. She had served on the funeral committee for over 50 years. She was a former member of the Pythian Sisters of Hillsboro; former member of the Fern Chapter of the O.E.S. of Hillsboro. She had served as secretary for the Reach Out van in Hillsboro for 23 years. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion of Hillsboro.
She leaves behind her son, Jerry (Wanda) Harshbarger, New Ross, Ind., and a daughter, Diana (Phil) Walters, Covington, Ind.; a brother, Arygle Webster, Carthage, Ill.; four grandchildren, Jeremy (Lizz) Walters, Jennifer (Michael) Shepherd, Heather (Kyle) Shirk and Jason (Megan) Harshbarger; nine great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Katelyn and Mitchell Shepherd, Macie and Gunnar Shirk, and Madison, Gabriella, Titus and Abigail Harshbarger. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amanda Walters, along with two brothers, Wayne and Lester Webster.
Friends may call 11 a.m.-1 p.m. EDT Wednesday, Aug. 3, at the Maus Funeral Home, Hillsboro. Services begin at 1 p.m. EDT at the funeral home, with Pastors Jason Harshbarger and Frank Sablan officiating. Burial will follow in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery, Waynetown, Ind.
