Virgil Murphy, 73, of Tilton, stepped into glory on Aug. 16, 2016, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, with his family by his side. Virgil was born the son of Dr. V. L. and Thelma (Thomson) Murphy on Oct. 12, 1942, in Danville. Virgil married Linda Phelps Jan. 7, 1967, in Georgetown. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Christopher and Michael Murphy; one daughter, Jennifer (David) Connolly; four grandchildren, Hannah, Ella, Lila and Vera Connolly; one sister, Delores (Ole) Olsen; and his best friends, Virgil and Janet Winkler.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents.
Virgil was a grinder at Central Foundry GM, where he retired in 1991. He also was the parts delivery driver for Kohne Motors. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, where he was an usher and maintained the church gardens. Virgil loved to garden; he had a large vegetable garden, and he enjoyed sharing his bounty with family, friends and his church family.
A Celebration of Virgil's life will be held Monday, Aug. 22, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Faith Baptist Church in Danville, with Pastor Allan Rudie officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be at Faith Baptist Church on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016, from 2-5 p.m. Memorials may be made in Virgil's name to Faith Baptist Church.
