Robert's Story

Text size

Robert Scott McGuire, known to many as "Big Rob," peacefully transitioned from his earthly home into eternal life at 8:38 a.m. Oct. 20, 2016.
Robby was born Jan. 16, 1964, in Danville, Ill., to the union of Robert and Priscilla (Derrickson) McGuire.
Robby was a 1981 Danville High School graduate. He attended Bethune Cookman College, Daytona Beach, Fla., on a football scholarship and received his B.S. degree in Physical Education and Health in 1988. He remained in Florida for many years teaching, coaching and ministering the word of God. He later relocated to Danville to carry on the legacy of his father in his home town.
Robby was employed with Danville District 118 since 2009 as a teacher's assistant. His passion was motivating, molding and mentoring every child. Big Rob could coach any sport; he enjoyed refereeing, umpiring and encouraging others to believe in themselves and pursuing their dreams.
He leaves to cherish the loving memory of his mother, Priscilla (James) Bradberry of Danville; stepmother, Narita (Jeff) Chapman of Georgia; his daughter, Re'Shonte' McGuire of Florida; brothers LaJace McGuire of Atlanta and JaDae McGuire of Chicago; his sisters, Gina McGuire of Danville and De'Vona Rae McGuire of Georgia; and three grandchildren. Also surviving are a grandchild, Micah McGuire, to whom he dedicated his heart and all his time for the past nine years raising him as the son he always wanted, and a host of family members and friends.
Robby was preceded in death by his father, Robert "Bobby" McGuire; paternal grandparents, Elzworth "Squirt" McGuire and Berniece (Joseph) Holmes; and his maternal grandfather, Albert "Pete" (Barb) Derrickson and ViViane "Granny" Wills.
A Celebration of Life will commence at noon, Saturday, Oct. 29, at New Life Church of Faith, 1419 N. Bowman Ave., Danville. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. until the start of the service. Officiating: Rev. McArthur Pendleton. Interment: Spring Hill Cemetery. A public viewing will commence from 1-5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 28, at Leek & Sons Funeral Home, 304 E. Williams St., Danville. The family is not scheduled to be present.
In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund has been established for Micah McGuire at Educational Personnel Federal Credit Union, 1102 N. Walnut St., Danville, IL 61832. Condolences and memorials may be sent by accessing www.leekandsonfuneralhome.com
