Norman Gene Gallagher passed away at the age of 76 on June 2, 2017, at Crossroads Care Center in Worthington, Minn. He had a long struggle with Lewy Body Dementia with Parkinson's symptoms.
Norm was born Jan. 2, 1941, to Ray and Margaret (Paxton) Gallagher in Danville, Ill. Norm grew up in Ridge Farm, Ill., graduating in 1959 from Ridge Farm High School. He then attended Danville Community College.
Norm was united in marriage to Katherine Klug on Sept. 4, 1965, in Columbus, Neb.
Norm loved agriculture and devoted his professional and volunteer life to the progress of agricultural practices and the betterment of the community. He started his career with TSC working in Chicago, Omaha, Neb., and Sioux Falls, S.D. Norm's next career move was working at Plains Supply in Huron, S.D. Then as owner of Fleet Family Center in Worthington, Minn., he was able to live out his desire to promote farming in the Midwest.
Norm has a long history of community involvement. He was a member of Jaycees and received the South Dakota JCI Senate Award and was the first recipient in South Dakota to receive the national Jaycee Ambassador Award. He also was a board member of the following organizations: Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce; Worthington Regional Hospital; Worthington Health Care Foundation; Worthington Area Industries; Worthington Water and Light Commission; Nobles County Commissioner; Mid-States Distributing, where he received the Kiesau Award; Minnesota West Worthington Campus Foundation; Sioux Valley Health Systems Foundation; McCrossan Boys Ranch Foundation; charter member of Worthington Community Foundation; Norwest Bank; and Southwest Minnesota Opportunity Council. He also was the recipient of the Community Pride Spirit Award from First State Bank Southwest, the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award and he was a member of the Ambassador's Club. He also was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Norm's passion's included family, collecting wildlife art, golfing, traveling, boating, spending a lot of time playing in the water, being with his grandkids, working and living life to the fullest.
Norm is survived by his wife, Katherine (Klug) of Worthington; daughters Christine (Mark) Seeley of Prairie du Chien, Wis., and Kari (Jerry) Marley of Trempealeau, Wis.; grandchildren Will, Collin and Lydia Seeley, Kyla, Max, Elsie and Oliver Marley; a brother, Charles (Carolyn) Gallagher of Ridge Farm, Ill., a sister, Sharon Cummins of Chipley, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. Norm is preceded in death by his daughter, Sarah; his parents; and brother-in-law, Bob Cummins.
Visitation was 5-8 p.m. Monday, June 12, at Benson Funeral Home, 1225 Ryan's Road, Worthington, MN. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, at First United Methodist Church, 408 11th St., Worthington, with a visitation from noon-1 p.m. prior to the service. Immediately following the service, there will be refreshments in the Fellowship Hall of the church. The graveside service is at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, in Columbus, Neb., at St. John's Calvary Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends will take place at Ramada Columbus Hotel and Conference Center, 265 33rd Ave., Columbus, Neb., following the graveside service.
