Mary K. (Unekis) McConnell, 85, of Covington, passed this world peacefully at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2016 at the Waters of Covington. She had been seriously ill the past two weeks. Mary was born in Westville to Joseph and Eva (Kelly) Unekis on Aug. 15, 1931.
Mary attended St. Mary's School and graduated from Schlarman High School, Danville in 1949. She attended Utterback & Brown School of Business after high school and worked at Barkman Chevrolet.
Mary met Edsel McConnell, and they were married on Dec. 21, 1951. They reared five children: Eleanor McConnell (deceased); Janet Lewis, Covington; Mary Ann Eades (Carl), Crawfordsville; Barbara Yoho, Eugene; and Edsel McConnell (Mary Jo), Fishers, Ind.
Mary had two brothers, Richard Unekis, deceased, and Joseph (Shirly) Unekis of Manhattan, Kan. Mary has 11 grandchildren: Dave (Amanda) Eades, Jerot Eades, Jennifer (Doug) Sutherlin, A. J. (Jess) Lewis, Andy (Samantha) Yoho, Kelly (Phil) Mobley, Emily (Kyle) Ross, Eric Mc Connell, Zack (Amanda) McConnell, Cody McConnell, and Mariah McConnell. There are also 11 great-grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband, daughter, and brother preceded her in death.
Mary's interests were reading, sewing, traveling, genealogy, flowers, and all her children's and grandchildren's activities. She encouraged all to do well in school.
Mary worked for Commercial-News as a secretary, then staff writer for about 15 years. She had a great interest in local history and enjoyed writing about different people locally.
A celebration of her life will be Saturday, Sept. 10, at 4 p.m. EDT at Shelby Funeral Home with Pastor Eddy Jones officiating. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. before the services. Per her wishes, cremation after the services with burial at Resurrection Cemetery, Danville, at a later date.
