Margaret A. Shields, 96, of Rossville, Ill., passed away at 1:36 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2016, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
She was born Sept. 28, 1920, in Henning, Ill., the daughter of Frank and Martha (Huffman) Bernard.
She married Donald J. Shields in 1942. He preceded her in death.
She is survived by one daughter, Paula Abbott of Greenwood, Ind.; four sons, Jim (Carolyn) Bernard of Rossville, Donald A. Shields of Rossville, Mike Shields of Stuart, Fla., and Randy (Joan) Shields of Hoopeston; one daughter-in-law, Janice Shields of Hoopeston; one loyal and devoted son-in-law, James Cooper of Whiteland, Ind., 101 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Sheila Cooper and Janet Abbott; one son, Steve Shields; one daughter-in-law, Patty Shields; one son-in-law, John Abbott; three sisters, Lola Plecker, Beverly Kelley and Barbara Bernard; and four brothers, Frank, Porter, A.G. and Otis Bernard.
Margaret was employed by GE for 28 years, until her retirement. She was a long-standing member of Rossville Church of Christ. Margaret enjoyed volunteering at Pleasant Meadows Nursing Home, painting, reading and writing poetry. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
A visitation will be 10 a.m.-noon Monday, Nov. 7, at Rossville Church of Christ, 514 E. Attica St. Rossville. The funeral service will follow the visitation and will begin at noon Monday at the church, with Pastor Kevin Purdy officiating. Burial will follow in Mann's Chapel Cemetery in rural Rossville.
