Danville - Luke Swisher, 90, passed through the Gate of Heaven on Saturday, April 29, 2007 at 3:20 p.m. at Danville Veteran's Medical Center where he had been a patient for a short time.
Luke was born on April 17, 1927 in Danville to Elmer and Mabel Windsor Swisher. He married Lillian M. Clanahan on May 1, 1948 in Henderson, KY. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years on December 10, 2000. Survivors include two sons: Douglas (Brenda) of Danville and Raymond of Cambridge, Ohio; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Samuel, Daniel, Paul, and Elmer; one sister Henrietta; and his parents. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends.
Luke attended South Mount Pleasant Grade School and Oakwood High School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during the last days of WWII. He worked for Allith Proudy retiring from there in 1975. He then worked at the County Market part time. In 1989 he began as a Red Vest Volunteer at Provena Hospital, donating his time to others.
During the 1950s he brought much joy to children as he played the part of Santa Claus at the Vermilion County Orphanage. He was also a little league baseball umpire during the 1950s and 1960s. His Santa Claus figure came out of retirement in the 1980s to be the Santa at the Danville mall. He enjoyed watching baseball, golf, and classic movies. Luke was a member and former Superintendent of the Westside Church of the Nazarene.
Funeral service 10:30 am Thursday at Westside Church of the Nazarene in Danville with Pastor Bill Wright officiating. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Danville with military honors by the American Legion Post #210. Visitation 5 to 7 pm on Wednesday at Robison Chapel, Catlin, Illinois. Memorials to the church.
