Howard 'Gene''s Story

Howard Eugene Shields 74, passed this life peacefully on April 13, 2017, at IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Howard Eugene Shields, 74, also known as "Gene" or" Geno," was born July 10, 1942, to Buford and Mary Etta Dumas Shields.
Gene graduated from Schlarman High School and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he was honorably discharged in 1965. He was employed at Stan Ray Boat Company, Hyster and Lauhoff. He then moved to Janesville, Wis., and was employed as a supervisor at General Motors where he later retired.
Gene's hobbies were playing cards, traveling, cooking and spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Gene also, along with his family and friends, helped Habitat build his son's Sean house.
Howard leaves to cherish his memories his children, Steve E. Shields, Michael T. Mitchell, Katrina E. Shields and Sean K. Shields; a stepdaughter, Teena Thigpen; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Buford Shields Jr., Jackie Shields (Adonna), and Robert Shields (Lois); and four sisters, Barbara Pinner, Loretta Lillard, Mary Malone and Beverly Hendricks (Mickie) He was preceded in death by his parents, Buford and Mary Etta Dumas Shields; two daughters, Irene Shields-Fluellen and Monica L. Shields; a son, Howard E. Shields Jr.; a stepdaughter, Sophia Savage; stepson, Lonnie Glover; brother, Charles Shields; and two sisters, Delores Shields-Savage and Irene Parker.
Gene's favorite saying was "Yo Mama!"
A Celebration of Life will commence at noon Thursday, April 20, at New Life Church of Faith, 1419 N. Bowman Ave., Danville. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. until the start of the service. Officiating: Rev. MacArthur Pendleton. Interment: Danville National Cemetery.
