COVINGTON, Ind. - Harold W. "Deke" McBride, 79, of Covington, passed away at 5:15 a.m. EDT Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Deke was born in Danville, Ill., on March 29, 1937. He was the son of the late Woodrow and Margaret "Marge" E. (Casner) McBride. Deke was raised in the Portland Arch area and graduated from Covington High School in 1955. He later moved into Covington in 1956.
Deke married Dorothy Vyse on April 7, 1956, in Mellott, Ind. They just celebrated their 60th anniversary.
Deke worked at Harrison Steel Castings Company in Attica for 42 years. At the time of his retirement he was superintendent of quality control for Harrison Steel.
His biggest passion was farming. He farmed up until his health would not permit. He was very proud of what the grandchildren called "Pa Dekes" farm.
Deke enjoyed the outdoors and liked to hunt deer and turkeys. He had several trophy deer heads that adorned his family room.
Deke was a 50-year member and Past Master of the Fountain Lodge 60 F.&A.M.; member of the Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine, Valleys of Terre Haute; member of the National Riflemans Club.
He leaves behind his wife, Dorothy of 60 years; three children, Charlotte (G.A.) Keeling, Sheila Cooke and Thad (Georgia) McBride, all of Covington; 11 grandchildren, Jessica Wallace, Diana (Aaron) Stein, Deanna (Jason) Hammer, Kayla and Colton Cooke, Ryan (fiancée, Mallory Carver) McBride and Abby McBride, Crystal Cutrell, Jade and Rhiannon Grubbs, and Melissa (Anthony) Breedlove; 16 great-grandchildren, Alanis Wallace, Xavier Summers, Tyra, Titus
and Trace Hammer, Austin, Ava May and Aiden Stein, Sady, Peyton, McGuire and Brady Cutrell, Jalen, Jacy, Tristan and Kelsey Breedlove; two brothers, Shike (Paula) McBride of Arizona and Larry Joe (Lydia) McBride, Lago Vista, Texas; two sisters, Hazel (Bill) Shipman Willowbrook, Ill., Ida Savage, Chrisman, Ill.; several nieces and nephews.
Deke never met a stranger. He was most congenial and loving person.
Friends may call 5-8 p.m. EDT Sunday, Aug. 7, at Maus Funeral Home, Attica, with the Masonic Memorial service at 8 p.m. EDT. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. EDT at the funeral home Monday, Aug. 8, with Pastor Robert Fairchild officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Covington.
