Gregory's Story

Gregory J. Davis, 67, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 15, 2017, at Carle Hospital in Urbana, Ill.
Gregory, "Greg," was born Aug. 10, 1949, to Rabbi and Vera (Taylor) Davis in Danville, Ill. He was the youngest of seven siblings: Mary Thomas, Douglas, Tony, Peter, Martin, Michael and James Davis.
Greg Davis was a member of Holy Family Church in Danville. He attended St. Patrick Elementary School and Schlarman High School. As a standout basketball player, Greg continued his education on scholarships at Burlington Junior College in Burlington, Iowa, before completing his bachelor's from the University of Texas at El Paso in El Paso, Texas.
Mr. Davis was an educator, basketball coach, mentor and friend to the many individuals he encountered over the years. He shared his knowledge in the Danville community by serving in multiple positions that advocated youth development.
Greg was a highly decorated high school and collegiate basketball player. He was a two-time All-State and one time All-American player. In 2006, he was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame; and in 2009, Greg was inducted into Schlarman High School Hall of Fame.
He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife, Leola Wiseman Davis; his son, Jonathon Davis; four brothers, Douglas, Anthony, Martin, and James; and a host of nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law. Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Rabbi and Vera Davis; a sister, Mary Thomas; brothers, Peter and Michael.
In lieu of flowers, all monetary donations should be made payable to Laura Lee Fellowship House to be used to promote Youth Recreational Scholarships for children in the Danville Community in memory of Gregory Davis.
Memorial Service will commence at 11 a.m. Friday, July 21, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 444 E. Main St. Officiating: Father Steven Loftus. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, July 20, at Leek & Sons Funeral Home, 304 E. Williams St. Interment will be at Memorial Park Southwood Cemetery in Memphis Tenn., on Monday July 24.
