Betty Jane Burmeister, of Westville, passed away suddenly on Saturday, April 22.
Born Aug. 19, 1938 to Dorothy (Coe) and Raymond R. Slifer, she was one of nine siblings. She attended Westville schools and had been a hairdresser in Hegeler and Westville since 1974. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence A. Burmeister, of Danville.
She is survived by three children from a previous marriage to Harold Miller of Westville: Bradley (Debra) Miller of Cayuga, Ind., Lisa (Alan) Elder of Henning, and Arlen Miller (Douglas Klahr) of Dallas, Texas. She is also survived by two grandchildren: Cole (Katie) Elder of Coulterville, Ill. and Danielle (Michael) Erdman of Jacksonville, Fla., as well as two great-grandsons, Olin and Otto Elder. Two sisters, Ruby Hall of Arab, Ala. and Doris Smith of Portland, Ore. also survive.
Betty was an avid gardener and became as Master Gardener while working in the Outdoor Lawn and Garden department at Lowe's. In addition to gardening, she enjoyed collecting and refinishing antique furniture and maintained an antique booth at Charlotte's in Danville for a number of years. She was an accomplished crafter and seamstress and enjoyed making one-of-a-kind gifts and clothing for her grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 6 at Pape Family Funeral Home, 10 E. Williams Street, in Danville, with Robbie Ketcherside officiating. Visitation will precede services from 1-3 p.m. She will be interred at a private graveside service at Sunset Memorial Park.
