Walter L. "Jake" Helms, 91, of rural Veedersburg, Ind., passed away at 2:10 p.m. EDT Friday June 7, 2019, at Williamsport Nursing & Rehabilitation, in Williamsport Ind.
Jake was born August 22, 1927, in Fountain County, Indiana, the son of Hardy and Dossie Jane (Bonebrake) Helms.
He married Phyllis I. Williams May 29, 1971. She preceded him in death September 5, 2003.
He also is preceded in death by an infant sister, Margaret Helms.
Surviving family include three daughters, Kathy Steele, Riverview Fla., Janet (Mike) Olsen, Apollo Beach Fla., Tracy Duncan, Apollo Beach, Fla.; two sons, David Helms, Indianapolis, Kevin (Lisa) Helms, Byron Ill.; a sister, Mary Catherine Reffet, Veedersburg; 14 grandchildren; several great- and great-great-grandchildren.
Jake attended school in both Yeddo and Kingman before enlisting in the U.S. Navy where he would serve his country in the European Theater of WWII on board the USS Ransom minesweeping ship. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he farmed for a few years and went on to be employed at TeePak in Danville, Ill., for over 30 years in the maintenance department.
He was a passionate IU Basketball fan. He also enjoyed fishing, both locally and the many fishing trips he had taken to Minnesota and Canada over the years. He had been a member of the F.&A.M. Lodge in Yeddo and member of the Shriners in Terre Haute.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. EDT Wednesday June 12, at Dickerson Funeral Home, 303 N. Main, Veedersburg, IN 47987. Funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 13, at the funeral home with Pastor Tom Covington officiating. Burial will follow at Bonebrake Cemetery near Veedersburg with military honors provided by American Legion Post 288.
