Virginia Jean Herzing, 85, of Mt. Vernon and a former resident of Dahlgren, died 5:15 a.m. Sunday, March 13, 2016, at the Mt. Vernon Residential Living Center in Mt. Vernon. Mrs. Herzing was born June 18, 1930, in St. Louis, the daughter of Lawrence and Myrtle (Greenlee) Dickerson. Jean married Louis James Herzing; he preceded her in death on July 5, 1997. Jean was a member of the St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Dahlgren where she had served in the Ladies Alter Sodality. Funeral mass for Virginia Jean Herzing will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, March 17, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Dahlgren with Father Slawomir Ptak officiating. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery in Dahlgren. Visitation was held Wednesday, March 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon and on Thursday from 9 a.m. until mass time at the church. Jean is survived by her three daughters, Kathy Williams and husband Alan of Waltonville, Susan Allen and husband Steve of Houston, Texas, and Janet Estes and husband Alan of Mt. Vernon; two sons, James Herzing and wife Nancy of Woodlawn and Bob Herzing and wife Lois of Scheller; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Louis James Herzing; daughter, Stephanie Fitzjerrells; and several brothers and sisters. For those wishing, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and will be accepted at the funeral home.
