ATTICA, Ind. - Victor LaVerne Howard, 85, Attica, passed away in Williamsport Health & Rehabilitation Center, Williamsport, at 3:33 a.m. EDT Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017.
Victor was born in Attica on Feb. 14, 1932. He was the son of the late Archibald and Victoria (Duez) Howard. He attended school in Attica and West Point. He was raised in West Point and later moved to Attica.
Victor first worked for the Attica Brickyard. He then worked for National Homes in Lafayette. He retired from Lafayette Roofing. After his retirement, Victor worked with his brother, Russell, doing excavating work.
Victor served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served during the Korean War and at the time of his honorable discharge, had attained the rank of private.
He was a member of Attica First United Methodist Church. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 3318 of Attica; member of the Moose Lodge 1482 of Attica.
Victor married Bessie M. Sowers on Feb. 14, 1951, in Lafayette.
He leaves behind his wife, Bessie, of 66 years along with five children, Victor L. (Connie) Howard Jr., Attica, Paul W.(Rose) Howard, Attica, Elvira E. (Keith) Haynes, Mellott, Timothy L. Howard, Attica, and Rick W. (Virginia) Howard, Attica; a brother, Elston Howard, Portland Arch; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas E. Howard; a great-granddaughter, Victoria Howard; five brothers, Art, Russell, Wesley, Archie and Emerson Howard; four sisters, Alma Hutson, Bea Collier, June Kiger ,Virginia Stewart and infant Elvira Howard.
Friends may call at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, noon EDT Friday, Sept. 22, until service time at 2 p.m. with Rev. David Adams officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Riverside Cemetery, Attica.
