Shirley's Story

Shirley Ann Payne, 77, a resident of Dahlgren, Illinois, passed away October 29, 2017 at the St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Centralia, IL.
She was born January 14, 1940, the daughter of Harry and Zella (Capps) Payne.
Shirley is survived by her dear friends and caretakers, Frances Scott of Dahlgren, Mike (Donna) Kilgore of Dahlgren, cousin Sarah Capps of Belle Rive. Also surviving are cousins, Burton Capps of Whittington, Gary Payne of Dahlgren, Roy Payne of Florida and Ruth (Ralph David) Kelly of New Mexico.
She was preceded in death by her parents and infant brother, William Harry Payne.
She was a 1958 graduate of Mt. Vernon Township High School and was a National Honor Society Scholar. She received her Bachelors and Masters degrees from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Shirley taught English for 32 years at Knoxville High School in Knoxville, Illinois where she served as Yearbook sponsor for several years. Recently, the Association of Retired Teachers honored her with a 40 year pin recognizing her service to the teachers profession.
After retirement, she pursued many interests including genealogy as a member of Jefferson County Genealogy Society and Frankfort Area Genealogy Society. She enjoyed dousing and animal rescue. She was devoted to her many beloved rescue cats.
A true patriot, Shirley was an active member of the Daniel Brush Chapter and Goshen Trails Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Union, Daughters of the Confederacy, Colonial Dames and the Prairie Pioneers. She held many offices in each organization.
Shirley was instrumental in establishing a library in Dahlgren where she served on their Board of Trustees as President, Vice President and Secretary.
She was an active member of the Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church, where she taught the "seniors" class for many years. Shirley was a true and loyal friend who will be missed by all who knew her.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeremy Hamson officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 1, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery near Macedonia, IL.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sugar Camp Cemetery Association, Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church or Dahlgren Public Library.
The Gholson Funeral Home of Dahlgren is in charge of arrangements.
