Sheldon's Story

WESTVILLE - Sheldon L. Smith, 85, prominent Westville resident, active in both civic and community affairs, passed away at 5:01 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, 2017, at his home.
He was born Dec. 31, 1931, in Sidell Township to Ralph and Ida Bryant Smith. He married Anita Madden Sept. 16, 1955, at Westville Congregational Church. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2015. Anita survives, as well as one daughter, Melanie (Chris) Crawford; three brothers, Ralph (Elizabeth) Smith Jr., Tommy (Helen) Smith, and William (Karen) Smith; one sister, Ruth (James) Thomas; two grandchildren, Emily (Jordan) Stone and Sara (Drew York) Crawford; and one great-grandson Micah Stone. He was preceded in death by three brothers, James, John, and Bobby; and one sister, Margerie Ballard. He attended Star Grade School and graduated from Allerton High School.
Sheldon drove a truck for Jones John Deere Implements from 1954-1970, and later joined Material Service Corp of Fairmount, where he retired as an Operating Engineer after 36 years. He served on the Westville Police Department for 12 years, serving two years as Chief of Police.
He was a member of the Westville Grade School Board, Westville Sanitary District Board, Westville Village Board, and was a member of Westville JC's. Sheldon was also a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, and served on the church board of trustees.
He enjoyed his family and friends, drinking coffee with his buddies, flower and vegetable gardening, his fish pond, and vacationing, eating out and his schnauzers.
The family would like to thank Carle Hospice, and nurses Mary, Karen, and aide Tracey for their wonderful care, and to Pastor David, and all those who sent cards and kept Sheldon in their prayers. He was such a good man.
Funeral service 10 a.m. Wednesday at Robison Chapel in Catlin. Rev. David Robberts-Mosser to officiate. Burial will follow in the Fairfield Cemetery north of Newman. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday at Robison Chapel. Memorials to Trinity United Church of Christ. Online condolences at www.robisonchapel.com.
