DANVILLE - After a courageous battle with cancer, Sharon Kay Martin went to be with her Lord and Savior at 6:02 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017, at home surrounded by her family. Sharon was born Aug. 20, 1945, in Danville, to Oliver Kenneth Hutson and Mary Elizabeth (Purple) Hutson. On May 27, 1963, Sharon married her loving husband of more than 49 years, Harlan Lee Martin.
Sharon's favorite pastime was spending time with her family. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother who was willing to travel hours to attend school and sports activities of her grandchildren. She enjoyed many trips with the grandkids.
Sharon enjoyed spending time camping at the GAO Grotto and serving as a clown in the Grotto Clown Unit. She also enjoyed traveling, and she enjoyed a trip to Italy, Greece, and Turkey in 2015.
Sharon was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church in Danville and dearly loved church family there, especially Pastor Matt Harmless and his wife, Charity.
Sharon retired after 24 years managing Bi-State Collection. She enjoyed her time there with her Danville Polyclinic family.
Sharon lived life to the fullest and is survived by her son, Edmund (Jeannie) Martin of Springfield; her daughter, Shelly Knee of Danville; three brothers, Kenneth (friend, Alice Ruffino) Hutson of Bismarck, Dohn (Jamie) Hutson of Covington, Ind., and Danny (Judy) Hutson of Covington; two sisters, Linda (Larry) Barfell of Covington, and Susie (Sonny) Keller of Covington. She also leaves grandchildren, Ashley (Lance) Luginbill of Peru, Ind., Jared (Jane) Martin of St. Peters, Mo., Amanda Martin of Springfield, and Lexie (Austin) Haskins of Oakwood; great-grandaughter, Adalyn Luginbill and great-grandson Logan Luginbill of Peru, Ind. She also leaves behind several much-loved nephews and nieces. Whenever a family member told Sharon "I love you," she responded with "I love you more!"
A celebration of Sharon's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2016, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home at 3940 N. Vermilion St. in Danville. Sharon's celebration services will be officiated by Pastor Matt Harmless of Edgewood Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, also at Sunset in Danville.
