Roy Newton, 83, of McLeansboro, passed away 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro. He was born Sept. 6, 1931, in Johnston City, the son of George Newton and Nellie (Alexander) Newton. He married Lela Mae McCullough on Sept. 5, 1954, in Harrisburg. He was a retired meat cutter. Roy attended Freedom Missionary Baptist Church, McLeansboro. He loved to take walks with his wife and have coffee with "the guys" at P.J.'s, McDonalds and the Dairy Queen. He served in the U.S. Army during Korea. He is survived by wife, Lela Mae Newton of McLeansboro; daughter, Linda Edwards and husband Randy of Mt. Vernon; and grandson, Aaron Edwards and wife Kelly of Effingham and Adam Edwards of Aurora. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ralph of Ridgeway, Raymond of Harrisburg and Robert of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two sisters, Lorene Grant of Eldorado and Naomi Carver of Eldorado. Funeral services were Tuesday at Harre Funeral Home, McLeansboro, with the Revs. Steve Shoultz and Robert Sefried officiating. Graveside military rites were conducted by the Jefferson County American Legion. Burial was at Veteran's Memorial of I.O.O.F. Cemetery, McLeansboro. Visitation was Tuesday prior to services at Harre Funeral Home, McLeansboro. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Hamilton Memorial Hospital Foundation and will be accepted at Harre Funeral Home. Harre Funeral Home, McLeansboro, is in charge of all arrangements.
