Roger Gerald Byerley, 81, formerly of Mount Vernon and originally from Dupo, passed away at 2:25 am on Monday, January 2, 2017 at Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with his daughter and son-in-law by his side.
Roger was born in Saint Louis, Missouri on March 8, 1935 to the late Luther and Bertie (Snelson) Byerley. He graduated from Dupo High School in 1953. He married Mary Joan Laurent on August 7, 1954, and she preceded him in death on December 10, 1993.
Roger was a Marine and served in the Korean War. After his service, a management position at Tractor Supply Company brought him to Mount Vernon, Illinois. He later opened Byerley Farm and Home on Old Fairfield Road. Roger loved to be outside. He enjoyed working in the yard, keeping up his garden, and raising animals. Roger loved to travel and was an excellent dancer. He was also a graduate of Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama.
Roger is survived by: four sons Roger A. Byerley and wife Phyllis, William Byerley and wife Melanie, Steven Byerley, and Joseph Byerley and wife Kathy all of Mt. Vernon; one daughter Cynthia Brotzman and husband Gregory of Milwaukee; and two brothers Robert Byerley and wife Margaret, and Walter Byerley and wife Joann, all of Columbia, Illinois; sister-in-law Barbara Byerley of DuPont, Washington; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, his brother Richard Byerley preceded him in death.
A Memorial Service, officiated by Reverend Victor Long, will be held at First United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois on Saturday, January 14th at 6:00. Visitation will precede the service beginning at 5:00. Graveside services with military rites will be held at 11:00 on Monday, January 16th at Saint Clair Memorial Gardens in Pell City, Alabama.
