Rita's Story

Rita Marie Kiefer, 87, of Belle Rive, died 1:26 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at her home surrounded by her daughters and family. She was born April 13, 1928, in Jefferson County, the daughter of William Rapp Sr. and Frieda (Stark) Rapp. She married Henry Kiefer on June 30, 1949, in St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Dahlgren; Henry passed away Jan. 24, 2014. She was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Dahlgren. She was a homemaker. She always said she had the best job, taking care of the childrfen. She will be remembered for her patience in teaching four daughters to cook, sew and embroider. Her sloppy Joes were famous and always requested by the grandchildren for holidays and get togethers. She was a lifelong member of St. Ann Altar Society, made dozens of hand quilted quilts and donated numerous quilts to the church for raffles and has given quilts to all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In later years, she spent many enjoyable hours researching family history. She always loved her flowers and songbirds. Rita cherished visits with her family and friends. She is survived by four daughters, Patricia Shaw and husband Larry of Ina, Joyce Stevenson and husband Gaylon of Ithaca, Mich., Maureen Kramm and husband Robert of West Frankfort and Sandra Reyling and partner Steve Coy of Dahlgren; a sister, Dolores Ann Orf of O’Fallon, Mo.; a brother, William Rapp Jr. and wife Bernetta of Dahlgren; 11 grandchildren, Chris White of Dahlgren, Greg White (Kerri) of McLeansboro, Sarah Harrah (Ben) of Benton, David Shaw of Ina, Jennifer Burishkin (John) of Cartersville, Ga., Kimberly Azelton of Loma Linda, Calif., Justin McElroy (Brittany) of Royalton, Megan Davis (Jeremy) of Marion, Adam Reyling of Dahlgren, Rebekah Reyling of Royalton and Lori Reyling of Urbana; seven step grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, Donna White, Christian and SEbastian Harra, Elizabeth Burishkin, Chesney and Randi McElroy, Mia Fernandez and Jessie Davis; seven step great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Henry; and brothers Lawrence, Harold and Phillip Rapp. Visitation was held 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, at Harre Funeral Home, Dahlgren. A Rosary service was conducted at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, at St. John Nupomucene Catholic Church, Dahlgren with Father Slawomir Ptak officiating Burial was at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Cemetery in Dahlgren. Due to family health issues, those attending the service were asked to refrain from wearing colognes or aftershaves during the services. Memorials may be made to St. John Catholic Cemetery fund and will be accepted at the funeral home. Harre Funeral Home, Dahlgren, is in charge of all arrangements.
