Richard's Story

Richard "Rick" Philip O'Neill, 73, of Covington, Ind., passed away at home February 4, 2018.
He was born February 27, 1944, in Danville, a son of Charles and Jayne O'Neill. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Marion; daughters Molly (Steve) Jones of Decatur, Carrie (John) Waterman of Danville, Abby (Bill) Smalley of Danville, and Lauren O'Neill of Covington. He also is survived by his brothern Timothy (Susan) O'Neill; grandchildren Kacie Waterman, Olivia Jones, Jadeyn Waterman, Wyatt Jones and Jace Waterman; step-grandchildren Thor Hughes, Brooke Davis; step-great-grandchildren Marley Davis, Kennedy Johnson; and nieces Bess Brook and Breanna Altman.
Rick was a graduate of Danville High School. He was a member of the Illinois National Guard, and a machinist with Holmes Brothers for 39 years.
After retirement, he owned and operated his own business, O'Neill Sheet Metal, with his wife, Marion. He was a talented craftsman, artist and avid reader. He lived to paint and draw and took joy in creating beautiful landscapes. He spent some of his final years building furniture and creating one of a kind pottery.
Rick was long known for his sense of humor and love of animals, traits he shared with the people he loved. His passion for animals exceeded most people's. He would rescue strays and bring them home, at one time having as many as six dogs and two cats. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great friend to many.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the ASPCA or local animal shelter of your choice and/or the American Cancer Society.
