Rev. Roy Arnold Shifley left this world to meet his Lord and Savior on April 22, 2017, aged 99 years and 4 months.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2017 at East Side Church of the Nazarene, 2129 S. 9th St., Mattoon. Burial will follow at the Arcola Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the church. Shrader Funeral Home, 204 N. Locust Street, Arcola, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Roy was born on December 11, 1917 to Henry and Martha (Dunn) Shifley in Ullin, Illinois. He was one of 10 children, all of whom along with their spouses have preceded him in death.

He married Nellie Severs on June 20, 1938. They were married 60 years before Nellies death on March 26, 1999. They were the parents of six children: Arnold, Ron, Sue (Hannemann), Marsha (Hurles), David, and Emilie (Vandeveer).

Survivors include his son, Ron Shifley and Mary Meyer of Yantis,Texas; two daughters, Emilie (Charles)
Vandeveer of Charleston; Marsha (Rev. Steven) Hurles of Cincinnati, Ohio; son-in-law, Douglas Hannemann of Palatine; seven grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three children (Arnold, David, and Sue Hannemann), and one grandchild, Kyle.

Roy served in the Civilian Conservation Corp, Company 693, out of Pekin Illinois from October of 1935 to March of 1937. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in World War II on May 8th, 1945. He served as a driver with the 8th Mechanized Calvary out of Ft. Riley, KS. He spent 11 months in Japan and was discharged on November 9th, 1946.

Returning home, he studied carpentry using his GI Bill and became a journeyman carpenter.

Roy was ordained as an Elder in the Church of the Nazarene on July 29th, 1960. He pastored at various churches in Illinois: Whittington, Dahlgren, Fairfield, Oakwood, Cahokia, Arcola, Barry, and Markham City. At all of them there was a need for his carpentry skills for building projects, repair and remodeling. He retired from pastoring in 1991 and served as a retired Elder with the Illinois District Church of the Nazarene.

At the time of his death, Roy was a member of the East Side Church of the Nazarene in Mattoon, IL.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, c/o Mattoon Eastside Church of the Nazarene, in lieu of flowers.
