Reese's Story

Text size

Reese Nelson Smith was born Jan. 4, 1938 to Russell Leroy and Mary Elizabeth Davis Smith, in Danville, and passed away Dec. 5, 2016. Reese attended and graduated from Jackson School and Danville High School. He was united in holy matrimony to Annie Lois Terry, of Melbourne, Fla., and from this union, two beautiful daughters were born.
Reese was first and foremost an exemplary father to his girls and a dedicated grandfather to his grandson, Jason. He showed no limits to the things he would teach his girls, raising them to be strong, independent women. He also loved the outdoors where he enjoyed hunting and destination fishing trips to Minnesota and Canada with his elder brother, Russell, and grandson, Jason.
Reese was a Communications Instructor in the U.S Air Force at Wright Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio when he retired in 1980 as a Master Sergeant. Upon retirement, Reese moved back to his hometown of Danville where he raised his girls as a single father. Reese was employed at the Veterans Administration, Master Guard and Lincoln Challenge.
Reese leaves to cherish his memory two loving daughters, Sandra (Michael) Wilson of Indianapolis and Donna (Paul) Townsend of Bolingbrook, Ill.; step-daughter, Janita Barber of Marion, Ill.; a brother, Verne (Mary) Smith of Indianapolis; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Smith of Indianapolis and Marie Smith of Danville; seven grandchildren: Jason Smith, Kierra Wilson, Dorian Townsend, Trinity Townsend, Anaiya Smith, Reginae Smith and Cameron Smith Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Keyshawn Rice, Zuri Taylor and Elias Smith; and his dear friend, Sandra Beasley.
