Qudella "Joe" Johnson transitioned peacefully at 2:50 a.m. April 16, 2017 at Presence Covenant Hospital in Urbana.
Qudella was born Dec. 16, 1934, in Arcola, Miss., to John (Bama) Johnson and Beatrice Robinson. He left Leland, Miss. in 1953. He became a member at St. Paul Baptist Church for over 25 years, then moved to Elkhart, Ind. and became a member of Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church. He started working at General Motors in 1953, where he worked for 38 years and retired in 1991. He enjoyed laughing and talking on the phone, going to the boat, and spending time with his family and friends.
He leaves to cherish his memories four sons: Charles V. Evans of Danville, Joseph E. (Ann) Johnson of Elkhart, Ind., Elmon Taylor of Danville, John P.(Ann) Johnson of Columbus, Ohio; three daughters: Patricia J. (Allen) Hatter, Ruth Bruce, and Lisa M. Johnson all of Danville; 23 grandchildren; 60 great- grandchildren; special friends: Thomas Goings Sr., Abraham Moore, Martha Williams, John Taylor, James Cain, William Cain; and a host of relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John (Bama) Johnson and Beatrice Robinson; six brothers; three sisters; one son, Christopher M. Evans; and great-grandson, Zyrell D. Johnson.
A Celebration of Life will commence at 12 noon Friday, April 21, at New Life Church of Faith, 1419 North Bowman Ave., Danville. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. until the start of the service.
