Peter "Pete"'s Story

Peter Joseph Zemont, 81, of Oakwood, passed away Monday, July 17, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, July 21, at Pape Family Funeral Home, 10 E. Williams St., Danville. A wake service will immediately follow at 7 p.m. with Father Steve Loftus officiating. Private family entombment at Resurrection Mausoleum will take place at a later time.
Pete was born April 1, 1936, in Westville to Paul and Rose (Dowiatt) Zemont. He attended Westville grade schools and Westville High School.
Pete was a maintenance man and worked at GE, then at Valmont, and later at TeePak. He also worked a short time as a mechanic at Sears. Pete was the man who could fix anything.
Never having met a stranger, Pete enjoyed visiting and talking. He enjoyed riding around in his golf cart with the dog, sitting by the campfire and playing euchre and 31 with Betty and his friends. He was a longtime member of The Kickapoo Carvers and enjoyed the outdoors. Pete loved hunting - turkey, deer, and even bear - and traveled often to do so. Camping and fishing also were on his favorites list.
Most of all Pete was a family man, spending the past 20 years enjoying retirement with his wife.
Pete married Helen "Betty" Thomas on Aug. 31, 1957, and the two have shared nearly 60 years together.
He also leaves behind his three children, Marianne (Scott) Uthe, Paul (Bonnie) Zemont and David (Fran) Zemont); five grandchildren, Joseph (Rachel) Shepherd, Jolee (Bryan) Phelps, Jana Marron, Julianne Marron and Jasmine Marron; and six great-grandchildren, Gavin and Keegan Shepherd, Jeslyn Rhodes, Kennedy Brown, and Isaak and Judah Phelps; and a sister, Anna Hill. He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Desrae Ramsey; and a brother-in-law, Joe Thomas.
Messages and memories may be left on our website at www.papefuneral.com, or on the Pape Family Funeral Home Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Pete's name to The Vermilion County Animal Shelter.
