WESTVILLE - Nellie Jane Nier, 86, of Westville, Ill., passed away at 11:58 a.m. Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at Presence United Samaritans Medical Center ER, Danville, Ill.
Nellie was born June 6, 1931, in Hinton, W.Va. She was the daughter of Cecil and Sinia Tucker Gill.
She married Dale W. Nier on April 23, 1949, in Paris, Ill. He preceded her in death on July 26, 2015, after 66 years of marriage.
Surviving are three daughters, Diane Doggett, Deborah Eldridge and Donna (William) Delp, all of Westville; one brother, Cornelius Gill of North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Kevin Doggett, Karrie Doggett, Helen Eldridge, Heath (Samantha) Eldridge, Katie (Colt) Songer, Doug Smith and Shelby Smith; and seven great-grandchildren, Katelyn Doggett, Ashley English, Mason English, Rayne Randle, Hayden Eldridge, Harper Eldridge and Karmen Songer. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and two sisters.
Nellie graduated from Westville High School. She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Westville for 50-plus years. She taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, was in the choir, and helped with many church functions.
Nellie was an amazing woman who always offered a helping hand, delightful conversation with a cup of coffee any time of the day, and her loving smile. She enjoyed working out in the yard tending to her flowers. She loved birds, especially parakeets and owls. She listened to country music and watched her favorite TV shows.
Nellie was best known for her cooking. She made the best green beans and potatoes. She insisted that we ate something even if we weren't hungry.
Nellie cherished spending time with her family and friends making wonderful memories. Her home was full of patience, kindness, love and laughter. She will be forever missed by her family and friends.
Funeral services: 10 a.m. Saturday, January 6, at Robison Chapel, Catlin, Ill., with Reverend David Robberts-Mosser officiating. Burial in Sandusky Cemetery, Westville, Ill. Visitation from 5-7 p.m. Friday, January 5, at Robison Chapel, Catlin, Ill. Online condolences at www.robisonchapel.com
