Melvin Niekamp, 84, of Carmi, passed away 8:45 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, at his residence. He was born on Aug. 6, 1930, in Carmi, the son of George Henry and Beulah (Brissel) Niekamp. Melvin married Ann Hankins on July 6, 1958. He was a farmer and carpenter and he especially enjoyed gardening and cooking. Melvin was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ann Niekamp of Carmi; a daughter and son-in-law, Jo and Henry Bob Haley of Carmi; one grandson, Duff Haley of Carmi; and many loving nieces and nephews. Melvin was preceded in death by a son, Harry Dale Niekamp; and three brothers, Eldon "Bud", Edwin and Robert E. Niekamp. Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 22, at noon at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. Burial was at Concord Cemetery near Carmi. Visitation was held 10 a.m. until the time of services on Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made in Melvin's memory to Emmanuel United Methodist Church and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home.
