Martha's Story

Text size

Martha Elizabeth (Kinney) Talbert, formerly of Danville, peacefully left this world on May 6, 2017, at Solera Skilled Nursing Center, in Houston, Texas.
Martha was born June 13, 1929, in Danville, Ill., to Weber and Mayme Kinney, where she happily lived her entire life until July 2016, when she moved to Katy, Texas, to be cared for by her niece. While in Katy, she lived at Carriage Inn Assisted Living Center.
On Jan. 1, 1952, she married Floyd Bostwick, whom she loved with all her heart until his passing in October 1984. She was later married to Gene Talbert from June 1986 until his death in January 1997.
Some of Martha's fondest memories as a young woman were of being a journeyman book binder at Interstate Publishing. In the 60s, she and her husband, Floyd, managed the Illiana Drive-In Theatre, where many young people had their first jobs, and provided for many humorous stories. After Floyd's death, she took a job as receptionist for Dr. E. Hetherington, where she met her second husband, Gene Talbert.
Anyone who knew Martha, knew she was a woman of many talents, and was never idle. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, painting, gardening, playing cards with friends and taking short trips. But her favorite activity was cleaning, and she always said her favorite tool was the vacuum. One of her greatest joys through the years was caring for, and totally spoiling, her dogs.
As a young married woman, Martha opened her home to Elizabeth Gaines Aunt Gaines to many who knew her (her mother's best friend). After Aunt Gaines' passing, Martha's aunt, Frances Demlow, lived with her for many years.
Martha was a member of Vermilion Heights Christian Church, and enjoyed the Willing Workers, the Widows' Support Group, and cooking for church dinners.
Martha is survived by her brother, Ellsworth (Jeannine) Kinney; stepson Kenneth (Sharon) Bostwick; step-grandchildren, Kelly (John) Sands, Darcy (Mark) Grites, all of Danville, Pat (Marcie) Bostwick, of Bismarck, Jim Bostwick of Carmel, Ind., Dana Bruens of Korea, and Danielle Jackson, of Ottawa, Ill.; nieces Sherry (Joe) Koenig of Katy, Texas, and Linda Valcourt of Pensacola, Fla.; nephew, David (Julie) Kinney of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; numerous great-grandchildren and great-nieces and nephews, and many close friends. Although Martha didn't have children of her own, she was "Aunt Martha" to many Danville residents.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Weber Kinney and Mayme Moulton Kinney, husbands Floyd Bostwick and Gene Talbert, step-son Jerry Bostwick, step-grandson Shane Bostwick, and aunt, Frances Demlow.
Martha was loved by many and will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to Vermilion Heights Christian Church or the Alzheimer's Association.
Graveside services will be at Spring Hill Cemetery at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 24, followed by a Memorial Service at 1 p.m. at Vermillion Heights Christian Church. Pastor Rod Godley will officiate. A memory book will be provided at the memorial service, to accept typed or handwritten memories or pictures of Martha.
