Leona's Story

Leona Duis Bowen, 101, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 3:00 P.M. March 19, 2017 at her residence in Mount Vernon, Illinois. She was born December 29, 1915 to Henry and Augusta (Classen) Heeren in Milford, Illinois in Iroquois County.
She was baptized, confirmed, and married at St. John's Lutheran Church of Schwer in Milford, Illinois. She married Harry Duis on May 1, 1938 and he preceded her in death on October 22, 1981. She married Vernon Bowen of Milford, Illinois on December 30, 1988 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois. They were blessed with 19 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on January 27, 2008.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
A visitation will be held from 1:30 P.M. until funeral service time, 2:00 P.M. Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois officiated by Pastor Terry Edwards.
A visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. until funeral service time, 12:00 P.M. Monday, March 27, 2017 at Milford Christian Church located at 811 East Hickory Street in Milford, Illinois 60953. Interment will follow at Iroquois County Memorial Park in Watseka, Illinois.
She is survived by her 3 children, including a daughter, Juline and Dr. Gerald Fox of Mount Vernon, Illinois; and 2 sons, Jerome and Darlene Duis of Jacksonville, Florida and Leon and Mary Duis of Iuka, Illinois; 7 grandchildren, Dr. Charlene and Dan Guggenheim of Carbondale, Colorado, Dr. Bryan and Marcia Fox of Spring Valley, California, Dr. Cynthia Fox and John Sewell of Tucson, Arizona, Donnie Duis of Jacksonville, Florida, Dana and Joshua Nelson of Jacksonville, Florida, Lena and Todd Herring of O'Fallon, Illinois, and Lee and Danielle Duis of Lakewood Ranch, Florida; 14 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; and a sister-in-law, Marie Heeren of Sheldon, Illinois.
Mrs. Bowen is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, 2 brothers, 3 sisters, and a granddaughter, Pricilla Duis.
In her past, she was active in church and community work, taught Sunday school, sang in choir, was a substitute organist, a 4-H leader, a Chairman on a cancer drive, and served on the Red Cross Blood Mobile. She organized a senior kitchen band in Salem, Illinois and belonged to the senior chorus. She worked at Electronics, Iroquois Hospital, and Roberts Clinic. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, gardening, refinishing furniture, and traveling. She was a lifetime member of the Iroquois County Historical Society, a member of Milford Christian Church, and a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Leona was blessed to enjoy her large 100th birthday celebration with her entire family last December and continued to live independently and be active with the church through her 101st birthday.
