Laura Susan Dayton, 68, of Danville, Ill., formerly of Paris, Ill., passed away at 9:10 p.m. Sunday, December 3, 2017, at Presence United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville.
She was retired after an education career of over 30 years, teaching in Pearl City, Ill., prior to serving over 25 years as librarian for the Catlin School District in Catlin, Ill. She had also worked seasonally at Walden Books of Danville.
She was born September 16, 1949, in Paris, the daughter of the late John Shelby and Faye Geneva (McMillan) Dayton.
Survivors include two brothers, Daniel J. (Deborah) Dayton of Paris, and Jeffrey S. (Laura) Dayton of Tolono, Ill.; a sister, Elizabeth A. Dayton of Paris; and three nephews, Peter V. and John A. Dayton, both of Paris, and Derek J. Dayton of Tolono.
Ms. Dayton was a 1967 graduate of Paris High School. She earned her bachelor's degree in Junior High Education in 1971 and her master's degree in Library Science in 1977, both from Eastern Illinois University.
She was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Paris and the Vermilion County Retired Teachers Association.
Her life was marked by dedication to reading, history and kindness to animals. She was an active member of the Old Town Preservation Association of Danville, where she had held several offices through the years. In addition, she was a member of the Rabbittown Neighborhood Association and the Vermilion County Historical Society. She was a staunch supporter of the Carnegie Library system and of animal rescue causes.
She also enjoyed volunteering at Samaritans Medical Center in Danville, travelling and spending time with her family and her many friends. A highlight of her recent years was traveling to Alaska with her sister in 2014.

Services celebrating her life will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 6, at Templeton Funeral Home in Paris, with the Reverend Michael C. Dixon officiating. Burial will follow in Edgar Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
