John T. Culpepper, 87, of McLeansboro, died 9:28 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2016, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
He was born May 15, 1929, in McLeansboro, the son of Richard H. and Lillian (McCain) Culpepper. He married Ruth E. Meadows on Dec. 31, 1959 and she passed away on Aug. 5, 2008.
He is survived by a daughter, Sharon R. McGill and husband Richard of Ava; four grandchildren, Joshua McGill and wife Monica of Godfrey, Christen Drew and husband Bryan of Benton, Jennifer McGill and fiance Kyle Brookman of Augusta, Ga., and Richard "Alex" McGill of Okinawa, Japan; eight great-grandchildren, Olivia Drew, Victoria Drew, Jonathan McGill, Elizabeth McGill, Harrison Drew, Jason McGill, Aurora Drew and Sarah McGill; and numerous special nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard Culpepper; a sister, Alta Culpepper; and a sister-in-law, Mary Culpepper.
He was a farmer. John served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict as a staff sergeant. His favorite activity was to work.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Harre Funeral Home with the Rev. Rick McNeely officiating. Burial was at IOOF Cemetery, McLeansboro with graveside military rites accorded by American Legion Post 106, McLeansboro and the Military Honors Team from Belleville.
Visitation was held 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
