Jean Alberta Moser was born July 23, 1920, in Decatur, to Louis and Caroline Stiner Moser. At the age of two-and-a-half years, she moved with her parents to a farm in Hamilton County southeast of McLeansboro On January 9, 1937, she was married to Thomas Wheeler Mayberry, in Decatur. To this union a daughter, Kathleen, was born. In 1941, Jean became a member of the Dale United Methodist Church to which she remained faithful and attained the distinction of being its most senior member. She taught Vacation Bible School many years during the 1950s and adult Bible study most of her adult life. Her desire was for the betterment of the church and the community. After Wheeler’s death on Sept. 4, 1963, “Miss Jean,” as she was affectionately known, remained on the farm just north of Dale where she enjoyed raising flowers, sewing and various other types of needlework she had learned as a 4-H leader. She was faithful to visit the sick and the elderly many times, taking homemade cookies for their enjoyment. She remained an active member of the Hamilton County Hospital Auxiliary until June 2008, when she moved to Georgia to be closer to family. Since then she has lived independently in a retirement center in Sandy Springs. Jean passed away Thursday evening at the Northeast Atlanta Health and Rehabilitation Center where she was recuperating from a hip fracture. Preceding her in death, in addition to Wheeler, were her father and mother; her brother, Frank Moser; and an infant great-grandson, Adam Butler Rigg. She is survived by Kathleen and her husband Richard Rigg of Dunwoody, Ga.; grandchildren, Gena Jensen and husband Marty of St. Charles, David Rigg and wife Diana of Duluth, Ga., and Kevin Rigg and wife Jannellen; and great-grandchildren Gracie Kathleen and Peter Banks Rigg of Barnesville, Ga.
