James D. Elder, 89, of Carmi, IL, died Sunday, July 13, 2014, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind. He was born October 14, 1924, in Evansville, the son of Hobart L. and Helen (Cluck) Elder. He was married to Audrey (Storey) Elder, and she survives. Jim was a World War II Navy veteran and member of the VFW and American Legion. Other memberships include Kiwanis International, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Ainad Shriners and the Masonic Lodge. For many years, he was active in local politics where he served as the County Chairman for the Democratic Party and Precinct Committeeman. Jim loved people and his enthusiasm showed in everything he did. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Audrey Elder of Carmi; sons James D. (Kathy) Elder of Conroe, TX, Terry (Sherri) Harper of Kingwood, TX; daughter Trudy (Don) Duvall of Carmi; step-daughter Connie Elder of Carmi; sister Dottie Jo Gandee of Mineral Wells, TX; grandchildren Jacob Elder, Jeremy Elder, Allie Harper and Whitney Duvall (Tony) Paprocki; great granddaughter Brianne Paprocki. He is preceded in death by his parents and sisters Kathryn and Elizabeth. Funeral Services were Saturday, July 19 at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi. Luke Raczykowski was the Officiant. Recordings of “Orange Blossom Special”, “City of New Orleans” and “Wabash Cannonball” were played. Casket bearers were Danny Satterfield, Jack Martin, Jacob Elder, Jeremy Elder, Dean Carter, Bob Sneed and Jimmy Gaines. Burial was in Big Prairie Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the VFW & Legion Color Guard and the US Navy Military Honors Team.
