He was born June 6, 1933 in rural Franklin County, Illinois, the son of Guy Andrew and Myrna Gwendolyn (Page) Capps. He married Mary Ellen (Yearwood) Capps on October 24, 1956 in Corinth, Alcorn County, Mississippi. They were blessed with 60 years of marriage.
Jim served his country in the United States Army, stationed in Germany and France following the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post #141 for 55+ years. He was also a member of Second Baptist Church.
Jim was employed by Page Insurance and Real Estate for several years selling real estate in the Mount Vernon area and Student Accident Insurance to schools in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, and Kentucky. Later he was a furniture manufacturers representative for companies covering Central and Southern Illinois.
Jim is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Capps of Mount Vernon, Illinois; a son, Michael Brent Capps and wife, Jennifer of Mount Vernon, Illinois; five grandchildren, Alyson Hampton of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Margaret Storment and husband, Mike of Boyd, Illinois, Sean Farley and wife, Mariah of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Brenda Krutsinger and husband, Jesse of Johnston City, Illinois, and Jessica Beel of Phoenix, Arizona; three great-grandchildren, Konner Halama, Amiya Farley, and Adiya Farley; brothers-in-law, Lee Yearwood and wife, Elaine of Waco, Texas and Darrell Yearwood and wife, Lynn of Saint Louis, Missouri; sister-in-law, Phyllis Yearwood of Mount Vernon, Illinois; daughter-in-law, Wendy Capps; nieces, Kristi Yearwood of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Lisa Judd and husband, Lonnie of Fort Worth, Texas, and Lori Yearwood of Waco, Texas; nephews, Scott Yearwood and wife, Jeri of Simpsonville, South Carolina and David Yearwood and wife, Parks of Portland, Maine.

Jim was a loving son, husband, and father. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. In his later years, he especially enjoyed the time he spent with his great-grandson, Konner. He often said that the problem with getting older was that too many of his closest friends and family had passed on before him. He considered his brothers-in-law, Lee and Darrell, as the brothers he never had.
It was Jims wish that he be cremated. A memorial service will be held Friday, Janaury 6, 2017 at 10 :00 A.M. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Reverend Merle Fullerton officiating.
