Ila's Story

Ila Dean Johnson, 91, of Wood River, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015, at her home with her family by her side. She was born Dec. 17, 1923, in Hamilton County, to Elmer and Alta (Todd) Hutchinson. Dean married Warren Johnson Jan. 15, 1946, in Morganfield, Ky.; he preceded her in death Nov. 22, 2008. Dean first worked in the shirt factory in McLeansboro, before moving to Wood River and going to work at Owen's Illinois Glass until her retirement. She enjoyed bowling and playing bingo. She is survived by her brother, Lloyd Hutchinson of Rosewood Heights; two sisters, Ruth Schmidt of Grayville and Clara Van Winkle of McLeansboro; and a great-grand nephew, Jim Fuller of Wood River, who she raised as her own. She was loved and will be missed by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a brother, Marion Hutchinson. Visitation and funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Paynic Home for Funerals in East Alton. Burial was held at Valhalla Memorial Gardens in Godfrey.
