Howard Dietrich, 76, of McLeansboro, died 9:02 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2014, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 29, 1937, in Chicago, the son of Edward and Viola (Stunkel) Dietrich. He married Helen Mulhausen on June 3, 1962, in Chicago; she preceded him in death in 1998. He later married Susan Pearl (Willis) on Oct. 3, 2003, in WHeaton; she survives in McLeansboro. In addition to his wife, Mr. Dietrich is survived by two sons, Erich Dietrich of Tuscon, Ariz., and Ryan Dietrich of Fairfield; a daughter, Kristine Malone and fiancee Troy Richards of Las Vegas; two stepchildren, Mike Mleinek and Michelle Russell, both of Canada; three grandchildren, Kelly and Jessica Malone and Ezra Russell; a sister-in-law, Sally Wiley of Blairsville, Ga.; a brother-in-law, Robert Pierce o0f Bridgeview; two very close friends, Danny Reed and John Moore; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Paul and sister Marlene. Mr. Dietrich was a retired foreman in paper manufacturing and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a Lutheran by faith. He loved gardening, wildlife and all aspects of nature. He loved life. Mr. Dietrich will be cremated as per his personal request and private family services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to Hospice of the Good Samaritan, Mt. Vernon, or to the American Cancer Society. A special thanks to Dr. Oza and staff and to the nurses on the fourth floor at Good Samaritan Regional Hospital in Mt. Vernon and to the hospice family.
