Helen's Story

Helen Jo Rapier-Thomas, transitioned this life on Thursday June 1, 2017 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. Helen was born on Jan. 28, 1932 in Terre Haute, Ind. Helen was the last surviving member of 12 siblings from the union of the late Joseph and Maggie Bowman Rapier.
Helen finished her schooling in Terre Haute and later relocated to Danville. Helen worked as switchboard operator at Vermilion County Courthouse before working at TeePak, where she retired. Helen was a member of Carter Metropolitan C.M.E. Church in Danville until 2013 when she moved her membership to St. Luke C.M.E. Church, in Champaign, where she was a faithful member. Helen loved spending time with her family, visiting and helping the elderly, working puzzles, listening to music, and being social.
Helen is survived by 10 children: Richard (Sharon), Fredrick, Hal, Rosita, Olive, Barbara, Robert (Leah), Margaret (Becky), Joe, and Billie Jo, and a special son-in-law, Frank Mason. Helen was also a proud grandmother of 36 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Special friends, Cheryl Roberts and Ora Jimson.
