Gregory's Story

Text size

It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of Gregory Lee Yanko on June 27, 2017 at the age of 67 in Austin, TX. Greg was surrounded by his family and loved ones and will forever be remembered as their beloved Father and Grandpa.
Greg grew up in Danville, Il., graduating for Danville High in 1968. By 1971, Greg was a decorated combat Marine veteran who fought bravely for his country in the Vietnam War. Greg married Mary Sue Lucas in 1970 and together they raised four children. The family moved to Austin, Texas. in 1981 and remained there until his passing.
Greg was a fun-loving, protective father in the lives of his four children. He was the undefeated champion of living room wresting, king of bad-dad jokes and protector of all. Greg instilled in his children the importance of hard work, the value of social and racial equality and love for both family and country.
Greg is remembered as a wonderful father, husband, grandfather, brother and uncle. He spent his free time watching his children and grandchildren's many sporting and school events. When he wasn't busy cheering on his children and grandchildren, Greg enjoyed spending time working with his hands and was a skilled carpenter. Greg happily handled honey-do's, daddy-please and friend's requests for his skills on home improvements.
Greg will be remembered by many in the communities of Danville and Austin for his years spent coaching youth baseball, basketball, football and soccer teams to successful seasons. He spent hours working on line-ups, playbooks and in the case of soccer, studying the rules book. Greg's style of coaching could best be described as passionate and fun.
Greg's entire career was spent in construction, building everything from homes to high rises, country clubs to shopping centers. His finished projects are spread out far and wide, from Illinois to Texas, and even reaching the East Coast. During his downtime, Greg enjoyed exercise and physical fitness. He could be found lifting weights in his garage or at the gym, running 10k races with his children and playing on various sport teams.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Emery and Virginia Yanko. Greg is survived by the love of his life, Mary Sue Lucas and their 2 sons and 2 daughters: Thor Yanko, Heath Yanko, Ashlynn Yanko and Somer (Deron) Zinnecker all of Austin Texas: his grandchildren: Zachary Yanko, Skylar Zinnecker, Taylor Yanko and Taelyn Zinnecker. Greg is also survived by his seven siblings; Cheri (Jerry) Elliot of Danville Il., Vickie Jones of Muskegon Wi., James (Kathy) Yanko of Centerville Ohio; Patrick Yanko of Hillsborough N.C.; Karen Yanko of Colorado Springs, Co.; Kathy Boddy Yanko of Tilton, Il.; and Michelle 'Shay" Anspach of Oakwood, Il.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on August 27, 2017 @ 2948 River Oaks Drive in Kingsland Texas at lake side for friends beginning at 11am.
