Gene Walsh, 91, of Covington, Ind., left us suddenly on Monday, Feb. 6, 2017.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017 at Pape Family Funeral Home, 10 E. Williams Street, in Danville, with Zachary Rainey officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday from 10-11:30 a.m. Burial will follow services at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Gene was born on Jan. 2, 1926, in Rantoul, to Edward and Dora (Williams) Walsh. He attended grade school in Rantoul and attended Oakwood High School before enlisting in the U.S. Marines and serving during the Korean War. Gene was a grocer and throughout the years worked at A&P Grocery as the Produce Manager, Star Market as the Assistant Manager, and IGA. He was very active with his church, Cedar Grove Nazarene Church, in which he was a longtime member until his health no longer allowed it. More recently he was a media member of Family Worship Center. Gene loved going to the Friendship Circle Center daily, where he enjoyed playing Bingo, socializing, and entertaining others. He had an infectious smile, and his wit and "just fine" attitude will be greatly missed.
Gene married Patsy Cary in 1947 and the two shared over 54 years together before her passing on Sept. 20, 2001. Together they had a daughter, Leana Sue Walsh and she survives. Gene married Sharon (Ferguson) Rainey on April 17, 2010 and the two have shared the past seven years together, enjoying each other's company and leaving behind many good memories. Sharon also expanded his family with her children: Bruce (Kathi) Rainey, Brent (Lori) Rainey, Zachary (Liz) Rainey, Annisa Rainey, and Joshua (Shelly) Rainey and her 20 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Patsy; a sister, Ella Meeks; and a brother, Louis Smith.
