Freeman Johnson, 72, of McLeansboro, died 10:21 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2014, at Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado. He was born July 30, 1942, in Norris City, the son of Herman and Carrie (Dillard) Johnson. He married Linda Venters who preceded him in death. He retired after 35 years as telephone technician with Verizon Phone Company. He was a former member of McLeansboro Masonic Polk Lodge. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a part two-term member of the McLeansboro City Council. He is survived by his sons, Brent Johnson and wife Carol of McLeansboro and Brian Johnson of McLeansboro; four grandchildren, Brandi Bowman and husband Curt of McLeansboro, Nathan Johnson of McLeansboro, Brett Johnson of McLeansboro and Jason Dale of McLeansboro; two great-grandchildren, Haedyn Chapman and Baylee Bowman; and two brothers, Luther Ray "Razor" Johnson and wife Ella of Norris City and Jerry "Gig" Johnson and wife Kay of Norris City. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. Graveside funeral service were held 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at the IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro with the Rev. Randall Ragan officiating. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Cancer Fund or the Heart Fund and will be accepted at Gholson Funeral Home. Gholson Funeral Home of McLeansboro is in charge of the arrangements.
