Emma L. Rose was born on March 24, 1931, in Hickman, Ky. She was the daughter of Pompey Merriweather and Essie Gilbert Merriweather. At the age of 86, surrounded by her children, she passed peacefully from this life into the arms of God on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018, at Carle Hospital, Urbana.
Emma and her husband George joined friends and family in Danville in 1955 after moving from Columbus, Ky. She was a long time member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Emma loved socializing with her family and friends.
Left to treasure many loving memories: sister, Robbie (Spencer) Simmons of Chicago; nine children, Pompia (Linda) Durril of Fort Wayne, Ind., Dorthea (David) Enyard of Atlanta, Ga., George (Brenda) Rose of Danville, Vanessa (Thomas) Coe of Danville, Janyce Rose of Atlanta, Gayla (Lowell) Briggs of Urbana, Carolyn Rose of Danville, Dennis (Shonna) Rose of Danville and Delisa (Howard) Knight of Danville; and special niece, Thelma (C. L.) Dye of Danville; 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Rose; parents, Pompie Merriweather and Essie Gilbert-Merriweather; brothers, Clyde and Clarence Merriweather; sisters, Verneda Davis and Earnestine Williams. She was always supported during times of need and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
A Homegoing Celebration will commence at noon Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, at New Life Church of Faith, 1419 N. Bowman Avenue, Danville. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Officiating: Pastor Thomas W. Miller. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, 2018, at Danville National Cemetery. Leek & Sons Funeral Home, 304 E. Williams in charge of arrangements.
