Ella Mae Shelton, 82, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away April 20, 2017 in Mesa, Arizona. Ella was born in Logan, West Virginia, to Willie and Eunice Huminsky on January 15, 1935. She married John Robert Shelton in 1952 and he preceded her in death.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, April 28, 2017 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois with her son, Robert Shelton officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois. A reception will follow at 1:30 P.M. at Logan Street Baptist Church in Mount Vernon.
Ella is survived by her two loving children: Robert (Bob) Shelton and wife, Debbie of Cochrane, Alberta and Tammy (Shelton) Parker and husband, John of Mesa, Arizona; ten great-grandchildren, Cecile, Nadia, Josh, Ethan (Shelton), Grace, Summer, Jackson (Bush); Max, Nora (Macdonald); Cheyenne (Parker); and six grandchildren: Heather Bush (Jim), Montgomery, Texas; Josh Shelton (April), Airdrie, Alberta; Matt Shelton, Calgary, Alberta; Abbie Macdonald (Cam) Cochrane, Alberta; Nathan Parker, (Lauren), El Segundo, California; Chris Parker (Lauren), Wilder, Idaho.
Ella is preceded in death by her husband, John Robert Shelton; and her mother, Eunice Block; as well as her beloved cat, Sassypoo.
She attended Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, Virginia and eventually moved to Mount Vernon with her husband John. Ella worked at the Florsheim Shoe Factory until it closed and later worked in the catalog department of JC Penney until she retired in 1997. She was a member and past president of the American Legion Womens Auxiliary. She enjoyed making Christmas special for her family, playing pinochle with friends and family and playing bingo. In 2014 she moved to Mesa, Arizona, to live with her daughter where she took part in many family activities.
