Eli Hook, 103, McLeansboro resident, died at 9:20 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2014, at the Hamilton Memorial Nursing Center in McLeansboro. He had been a Section Foreman with the Anheuser Busch Railway in St. Louis. Eli was born December 7, 1910, in Dahlgren, the son of Levi and Elizabeth (Bond) Hook. He married Ruth Alice Duryea on August 17, 1946, in St. Louis. He taught Sunday School for 15 years at Blooming Grove Church; was a member of the Blooming Grove Church since 1970 and was a trustee for 27 years. He was a Past Life member of Polk Lodge 137 A.F. & A.M. for 44 years and Past Master and member of Scottish Rite Bodies of Belleville, Ainad Shriners of Ainad Temple of E. St. Louis. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Hook of McLeansboro; two sons, Eli Hook, Jr. and wife Joyce of McLeansboro; and Ralph and wife Verna of Granite City, IL; a daughter, Janet Lientz and husband Monte of Terre Houte, IN; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Eli Hook were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at the Blooming Grove Baptist Church with burial in Blooming Grove Cemetery. Rev. Josh Gottman officiated. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sons, Charles Price, George Hook and Harold Hook: two brothers Wilburn and Alfred Hook; two sisters, Doris Orr and Lucy Johnson; Grandsons, Donald Hook and David Price. The Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro is in charge of all the arrangements.
